Turning 65 is an important milestone for Americans since it is their initial opportunity to enroll in Medicare. Original Medicare (Parts A & B)

Original Medicare is provided by the federal government.
When you turn 65 you must enroll in Medicare Part A & Part B. Parts A and B are often referred to as Original Medicare.
Original Medicare Part A helps pay your hospital claims. Most people have paid for their Part A premiums through payroll taxes while working.

Part B helps pay for things like doctor visits, preventive screenings and durable medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers etc.
You will pay 20% of the cost for services and Medicare will pay 80%. There is no yearly limit on what you pay out-of-pocket, unless you have supplemental coverage like Medicare Supplement Insurance or Medigap.

Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C)

Medicare Advantage Plans, sometimes called “Part C” or “MA Plans,” are a type of Medicare health plan offered by private companies approved by Medicare to provide you with all your Part A and Part B benefits.
Part C or Medicare Advantage plans serve as an alternative to Original Medicare.
Along with covering doctors and hospitals, Medicare Advantage Plans will oftentimes include coverage for prescription drugs. Medicare Advantage Plans may also offer some extra benefits that Original Medicare doesn’t cover such as vision, hearing, dental, gym membership, and emergency response services. Medicare Advantage Plans have a yearly limit on what you pay out of pocket for services  that Medicare Part A and Part B covers. Once you reach your plan’s limit, you’ll pay nothing for services Part A and Part B covers for the rest of the year.

Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (Part D)

Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Plan-PDP) is the part of Medicare that covers most outpatient prescription drugs. Part D is offered through private companies approved by the federal government either as a stand-alone plan for those enrolled in Original Medicare, or as an added value benefit included with your Medicare Advantage Plan.

To get Medicare drug coverage, you must join a plan run by an insurance company or other private company approved by Medicare. All plans are not the same and they can vary in cost, copays and specific drug coverage. The plan you choose should be as good as the approved Medicare model. You should check the drug plan that meets your specific needs yearly because the plans change every year.

Medicare Supplement Plans

Medicare Supplement Plans are offered by private insurance companies that are standardized by the federal government.
Medicare Supplements, sometimes called “Medigap” are policies that help fill the gaps in Original Medicare
Medicare Supplement Insurance plans (Medigap) can help pay some of the out-of-pocket cost not covered by Parts A & B such as copayments, coinsurance and deductibles. These plans do not change from year to year.

Providers who accept Medicare will also accept Supplement plans. Medicare will pay covered benefits at 80% and the supplement policy you received will be billed the remaining balance.

Medigap Plans do not include prescription drug coverage (Medicare Part D or PDP), therefore you will need to purchase a stand-a-lone prescription drug plan.

Medigap policies generally don't cover long-term care, vision or dental care, hearing aids, eyeglasses, or private-duty nursing. Therefore, you would have to purchase additional policies for those things.
